Do I have to have all of the registers open in my home?

I have been having some issues with my furnace and have had a number of technicians check it.

I covered registers that didn’t provide any benefits (registers under my bed, registers in unused rooms, etc) because if I have 4 vents and I close one, isn’t their 33% of the air going to 3 vents?

One of the technicians commented on the fact that I had covered registers and stated that was effecting the operation of my furnace.

That same technician commented the next time he came to my home that only having 2 or 3 covered would not cause any problems. The next technician stated that he disagreed with the previous technician.

It makes valid sense, but I don’t want to cause problems with my furnace.

So my question for Google: Do I have to have all of the registers open in my home?

Let’s skim through for some websites that look reputable (to a single-mother that knows very-little HVAC knowledge).

First topic: money. My personal verdict is yes.

An Energy Vanguard blog says there are unintended consequences for closing unused ducts, such as:

  • Increased duct leakage
  • Lower air flow with PSC blowers
  • Increased energy use with ECM blowers
  • Comfort problems because of low air flow
  • Frozen air conditioner coil
  • Dead compressor
  • Cracked heat exchanger, with the potential for getting carbon monoxide in your home
  • Increased infiltration/exfiltration due to unbalanced leakage
  • Condensation and mold growth in winter due to lower surface temperatures in rooms with closed vents

But…. I observed the the blog was about downflow furnaces... I do know I have an upflow furnace (because I don’t have a basement and my furnace is on the main floor).

So does the recommendation of no stay the same? Please hold/brb.

Ok I’m back. Lol Google failed me, so i will continue investigating until I come up with concrete answer, I may have to retract my statement about google knowing everything 😭 if you find a successful Google search, let me know! Or if you have a link to a website that discusses my new Google search:

Do you have to open every vent in an updraft furnace?

Thank you for visiting, come back soon!
